The heat pump’s performance is only as good as the design of the ductwork system. Poor air distribution will directly affect the performance of the heat pump.
One of the main applications for air-to-air heat pumps is that of replacement of an existing oil, gas or electric furnace. The ductwork system for the furnace is not as critical as the ductwork required for an air-to-air heat pump. Proper sizing of the main supply air plenum and the lateral supply air runs is very important. Proper sizing of the return air plenum and the return air grills is also very important. Ductwork is sized taking into account static pressure, air velocity and the cubic feet per minute of air travelling down the duct.
The heat pump’s indoor coil adds static pressure to the ductwork. The CFM capacity of the fan when rated with the static pressure of the system must be sized correctly in order for the heat pump to achieve its energy performance.
When the furnace system is removed and a new heat pump air handler is installed the physical size limitation of the ductwork can limit the performance of the system. Remedies such as turning vanes are often required to increase the performance of the airflow.
