Ductless split heat pumps are based on the same principle of operation as regular air-to-air heat pumps. Instead of the indoor air handler attached to a ductwork distribution system, the indoor air handler is mounted on the wall. The ductless split air handler is remote controlled and typically serves the room it is in. Multiple air handlers can be connected to one outdoor unit in order to achieve zoning.
